Ein Tag in...
...Oxford
On our exchange in Aylesbury, we went on many exciting and memorable trips. One of these trips led us to the city of Oxford, a city known for its remarkable education, its architecture, and its libraries.
With a tour guide by our side, we got a glimpse into the daily life of students and were also able to set foot on the campus of Balliol College. Every single one of the colleges has its own chapel, library, as well as a dining hall. Oxford’s dining halls were used as an inspiration to create the design for the well-known Great Hall in the Harry Potter movies. The Chapel is decorated with big stained-glass windows and is used as the choir’s practice room. After the visit to one of the colleges, our tour guide showed us the Covered Market. The Covered Market is home to over 60 independent shops where you could buy anything from delicious cookies to socks with silly patterns. We found out that Oxford carries 250,000 miles of underground bookshelves and much more thanks to our tour. We discovered the school’s history and learned when the only boys’ school started giving women opportunities to study on their campus. After the tour we got to explore the city by ourselves. Many climbed 127 stairs to get to the top of the church tower in order to enjoy the entire view of the city and its architecture, while others focused on getting official merchandise and exploring various bookstores. At the end of the day trip, we were all exhausted and yet very satisfied with our trip to Oxford. It was an incredible experience to be able to visit one of the world’s oldest universities and get a glimpse into the daily lives of students there. Fun fact: A professor at Oxford only teaches about three students at a time!
